July 2002 Photo By: Lt. Larry Munhall (USCG Ret.) The St. George Reef Lighthouse as it appeared in 1964. The 146-foot tower took ten years to build and at $726,000 it was the most expensive lighthouse built by the United States Lighthouse Service. It originally housed a first order Fresnel lens that was shipped from France and first lit in 1892. The lighthouse was abandoned in 1975 when it was replaced by a lighted buoy.
