The original 1st order Fresnel lens of North Carolina’s Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, on display at the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras Village, has been disassembled to be moved to a new location in the museum during its $5.1 million remodeling project.
The work was done by Jim Woodward, owner of The Lighthouse Consultant, LLC. Woodward is a certified Coast Guard lampist with decades of experience in the care of historic Fresnel lenses. He has worked on the restoration, the disassembling, and reassembling of well over 200 Fresnel lenses all over the nation. In fact, it was Jim Woodward and his team who originally installed the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse lens at the museum 18 years ago. His crew of lens experts for this project were Tommy Cumella and Leon Hodge.
When the new spot in the museum is ready for the lens, Jim Woodward and his crew will return to do the process all over again, just like they did 18 years ago.
