Built in 1870, North Carolina’s Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, at 193 feet, is the tallest lighthouse in the United States. In 1999, at a cost of $12 million, the lighthouse was moved 2,900 feet away from the eroding shoreline. The lighthouse is now owned by the National Park Service.
