Sand Island Lighthouse as it appeared shortly after the 1906 hurricane. By this time most of the island was under water. Although living quarters were provided for the keepers at nearby Fort Morgan, for the next twenty-five years when they were on duty, the keepers were required to live in small quarters at the base of the tower.
