Photo Caption:
The Port Austin Reef Lighthouse as it appeared in 1934. It was first lighted on April 12, 1900. It was a seasonal lighthouse and was generally in operation from April to December of each year, when ice would close the shipping lanes. The 4th order Fresnel lens was removed from the tower in 1941 and replaced with a modern optic. The lighthouse was automated in 1953. (Lighthouse Digest archives) Back to the edition of: Sep/Oct 2022
