Edward Spurling, shown here with his wife Gertie, was the light keeper of Dice Head Lighthouse from 1911 to 1921. He started his lighthouse keeping career at Maine’s Great Duck Island Lighthouse in 1894, and went on to serve at Whitehead Island Lighthouse, Avery Rock Lighthouse, and Franklin Island Lighthouse where he was keeper from 1900 to 1911. Being stationed at Dice Head Lighthouse was a welcome change for his family, who were finally able to live on the mainland amongst other people.
