The 3rd order Fresnel lens in the lantern of Point Cabrillo Lighthouse was made by Chance Brothers of Birmingham, England. The Coast Guard stopped using the lens in 1972, but they left the lens in lantern. Then, they installed an automated DCB-224 aero beacon on a platform that was mounted to the seaward side of the building. In 1998, the Fresnel lens was removed from the lantern for restoration and reinstalled in August of 1999. To learn more about the lighthouse we would recommend the book, Point Cabrillo Light Station by Bruce Rogerson, from the Images of America series of books from Arcadia Publishing.
