This quilt panel commemorates the day in 1941 when the official White House Christmas tree was cut down on St. Croix Island. This took place just two days after the attack at Pearl Harbor, and the tree was shipped to Washington, D.C. where Winston Churchill was spending Christmas with President Roosevelt. St. Croix Island was chosen because it was believed to be the first place where Christmas was celebrated in North America by French settlers in 1604.
