South Africa's Danger Point Lighthouse was reached easily by the Lighthouse Depot tour group. But this was not the case in the early days of the lighthouse which dates back to 1895. Lighthouse keepers did not want to be assigned to this post. The road in those days was always in poor condition and travel to the lighthouse was difficult, plus schooling for the children was a problem. The HMS Birkenhead sank here in 1852 with 648 aboard; and a plaque at the lighthouse honors the 445 lost lives of that wreck. The standard of the sea, "women and children first," was set here, with all of the women and children who were on board being saved.
