Charles H. Hammond (1841-1912), who was the keeper of the Chatham Lighthouse from 1899 to 1907, is one of only a few lighthouse keepers who also served as the captain of a lightship. He joined the U.S. Lighthouse Service in 1882 as the First Mate on the Handkerchief Lightship LV-004 and was promoted to Master (Captain) in 1886. In 1890, he secured the job as the keeper of the Monomoy Point Light Station at the southern end of Monomoy Island near Chatham, Massachusetts, where he served until securing the job as the keeper of the Chatham Lighthouse. On December 15, 1864, Charles Hammond married Dorinda Howes, and the couple had one child, Cecelia. Because of ill health, Charles Hammond retired in 1907 and died at the age of 70 on September 2, 1912.
