This was the first lighthouse designed to be powered by electrical generators (1871).

There is a tea room and museum at the lighthouse. Open from March 31 - October 31, daily except Fridays, 11.00 am - 5.00 pm, last entry at 4.30 pm.

By bus, Stagecoach Sunderland - South Shields, passes Sunderland railway station and South Shields Metro station.
