This lighthouse was designed by engineers Thomas Smith and Robert Stevenson. Tower Height: 75 Height of Focal Plane: 79 Characteristic and Range: Flashing White (2) every 20 seconds, visible for 18 nautical miles. Description of Tower: Conical tower with black and white vertical stripes.

If you wish to cross the tidal causeway from the Sanday Trail to Start Island and the lighthouse, accurate tidal information is required. It is a 25 minutes walk each way. Keep strictly to the path as the rest of Start Island is private property. Visitors wishing to see the interior of the lighthouse must be accompanied.
