In the realm of maritime history enthusiasts, lighthouse aficionados, and devoted readers of Lighthouse Digest, the recent passing of Tim Harrison, the founding editor, has sent ripples through a community deeply connected by a shared passion.

It was 33 years ago that Tim put an ad in the back of our book, Lighthouses of Maine and New Hampshire, that said: “Want to learn more about lighthouses? Subscribe to Lighthouse Digest.”

It was a year and a half later in May of 1992, with only 34 paid subscribers, that Tim and I published the first issue of Lighthouse Digest.

Now, 294 issues later, Lighthouse Digest has become a driving force in lighthouse history preservation and more importantly in rediscovering, archiving, and publishing of that history. As Tim often said, without the stories of the keepers and families who lived at lighthouses, it is just a cold empty structure.

Tim Harrison steered Lighthouse Digest through the decades, nurturing its growth and ensuring its relevance in an ever-changing world. Now, with a new editor at the helm, the responsibility falls upon new shoulders to propel Tim’s mission of preserving lighthouse history into the future.

Lighthouse Digest is more than a compilation of articles; it is a living entity, a labor of love. It aims not only to weather this storm of change but to emerge as strong and committed as ever to the mission that has fueled it for decades.

As the search for new owners continues, dedicated readers are urged to keep their subscriptions up-to-date. The lifeblood of any publication is its readers, and the sustainability of Lighthouse Digest depends on the unwavering support of its community. In this collective effort, we become keepers of the flame, passing it on to a new generation of lighthouse aficionados. We thank you for your ongoing support over the last 31 years.

The latest issue is proudly dedicated to Tim Harrison. The team was determined to honor Tim’s legacy by publishing the September-October issue, his last; and in this latest issue, November-December, we pay tribute to him.

Lighthouse Digest will find its way into 2024 and beyond, guided by the enduring beacon left by Tim Harrison.
