The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles recently unveiled a new $60 custom license plate that features the 110-foot-tall, 1796 Montauk Point Lighthouse that marks the entrance to Long Island Sound. The plate is among nearly 200 custom plate options offered by New York State.

However, some people were upset that the image of the famous light station was flipped and its view is shown backwards on the plate; but according to state officials the original photograph used to make the final design “was flipped for maximum readability and to not interfere with the letters and numbers on the plate.”

Personally, flipped or not, we think it’s a pretty slick-looking license plate and we’d love to have a sample one to display in our office.

Shown here to give perspective to the fact that the photo is flipped is a photo by Paul Elmore from the Lighthouse Digest archives.
