In March of 1965, a marina with a large lighthouse-looking structure opened on the Nyack waterfront in Nyack, New York. It was part of a development built and owned by Victor Wallace Ferris, a multimillionaire industrialist, and an inventor who is largely credited with inventing the paper milk carton.
The four-story lighthouse was made from two discarded gas tanks and was painted with blue stripes on two levels. Next to the Nyack Yacht Center were a number of shops and businesses, many that included the word “lighthouse” in their name, such as: The Lighthouse Boutique; The Lighthouse Art Gallery; and The Lighthouse Yacht Center Coffee Shop, which offered The Lighthouse Burger.
However, changing times and local politics caught up with the lighthouse, which failed to make it into the final plans for a new development. On March 8, 1985, Victor W. Ferris died at the age of 75, and a short time later, on July 5, 1985, bulldozers demolished the once unique structure that he had built only 20 years earlier. (Photo courtesy Nyack Public Library)
