As I reflect back on our 30 years of publishing Lighthouse Digest, I can’t help but appreciate our many loyal subscribers. We wouldn’t have made it this long without them. And I thank each and every one of you, whether you have been with us for many years, or have newly subscribed.

We are proud of the fact that we have worked hard at researching deep into lighthouse history to uncover historic photographs and memories of the lighthouse keepers of yesteryear and have published those memories and photographs, many for the first time, so that they are now saved for future generations. This would not have been possible without our staff, our many volunteers and friends, many of whom have passed on, as well as lighthouse groups, descendants of lighthouse families, and so many others – too many to name here – who helped us to tell their stories and create our tremendous archives.

But, in this age of social media, times have changed and not always for the betterment of all. Our subscriber base, which dropped dramatically after 9/11, has never rebounded and has continued to drop until only recently, when it leveled off and we started to see an ever-so-slight increase. However, as we age, I realize that we will not be here forever, and others will need to step forward or be hired to start taking over the reins and keep Lighthouse Digest going for another 30 years. But that will take substantial funding, and while the donations we receive are extremely helpful and sincerely appreciated, they are a far cry from what is needed. Even though grant money to research, publish, and save history seems to be nonexistent, I remain positive that the answers and solutions are just around the corner. We just need to find that corner.

We hope that you enjoy this issue that includes many photos and stories that would not have been told or published if it had not been for Lighthouse Digest, something that we have consistently done with every issue for the past 30 years.

As always, I welcome your thoughts, suggestions, and comments.

Thanks for the last 30 years and the hope of 30 more.
