Help Wanted for Indiana Harbor’s Lost Lighthouse History

After extensive searching over the years for photographs of the demolition of the Indiana Harbor Breakwater Lighthouse in East Chicago, Indiana, we have given up.

In fact, only a few photos of the lighthouse seem to exist. It’s almost as if no one ever cared about the structure or saving its photographic history.

Although the year of 1923 was written on the back ...

Today the only lighthouse in the area is an art deco style tower that was built in 1935, which is a virtual twin to Wisconsin’s Port Washington Breakwater Lighthouse, both of which have lost their lanterns.

Zooming in on one section of the photo.

Records seem to indicate that the lighthouse was first lighted on May 2, 1924. At some point in the 1940s it was discontinued and later demolished. However, the crib that the lighthouse stood upon still stands today and is marked by a nondescript cylindrical aid to navigation.
