Getting to and from California’s 1889 Point Sur Lighthouse was quite a project for its early lighthouse keepers. The invention of the automobile made the trip easier, but it also drew tourists who arrived on buses, sometimes encountering the lighthouse keeper, who was coming the other way. Although the tour bus drivers and their passengers were willing to risk their lives on the precarious road, with the possibility of going over the cliff to get to the light station, the mail carrier from the U.S. Post Office was not, which necessitated a mail drop building to be erected at the entrance.
