The largest amount was for $8,500 to the preservation group on Isle au Haut, Maine to replace corroded support beams that imperil the lantern of the Isle au Haut Lighthouse, also known as Point Robinson Lighthouse. The Friends of Isle au Haut Lighthouse will use the grant money to install galvanized steel beams in place of two failing beams under the watch room and lantern floors, which will be the first step in saving the historic tower.

A $7,000 grant was awarded toward the $17,000 needed for the Thacher Island Association to keep the Cape Ann Light Station’s South Tower in Massachusetts from suffering the same fate as the North Tower, which had granite pieces fall from its gallery last year. Stainless steel bands will be installed as unobtrusively as possible around the original stone bands circling the gallery and lantern decks.

For the Keweenaw Waterway Lower Entrance Lighthouse in Michigan, a $3,500 grant was given toward the $12,000 condition assessment report needed to document its planned restoration.

The Huntington Harbor Lighthouse Preservation Society received $1,000 as a show of support to the group’s ongoing efforts and for an exterior railing system that needs a combination of restoration and replacement at the 1912 lighthouse located in Long Island Sound.
