We are saddened to report that Richard “Dick” Moehl, one of this nation’s most dedicated leaders of the modern lighthouse preservation movement, has passed away. Although Dick was president of the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association (GLLKA) from 1985 to 2012, and much of his work concentrated on Great Lakes Lighthouses, his hard work reached every corner of the United States.

As well as being a great friend to many, Dick Moehl was one of the most passionate and dedicated lighthouse preservationists who ever lived, and he fought tirelessly for numerous lighthouse causes, including the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act. He will also be remembered for the “Miracle in the Straits of Mackinac” in which he brought the crumbling St. Helena Lighthouse back to life, and also his immense amount of work with the Boy Scouts.

Dick Moehl earned many honors and awards from the lighthouse community, which he reluctantly accepted because he was not in it for awards; he was doing it because it was the right thing to do. And he always had fun doing it while making it enjoyable for others.

Over the years we worked with Dick Moehl many times and communicated on a regular basis. He made the world a better place; there was no one else like him, and it will be close to impossible to replicate all the good that he did and accomplished. We must not ever forget what he did for the lighthouse community. He made a difference.

Our condolences go out to his family and friends who must be in the hundreds upon hundreds. May God rest his soul until we meet again in that big lighthouse in the sky.
