The Sayrook Breakwater Lighthouse in Old Saybrook, Connecticut is for sale again. The lighthouse, famous for being on the “Save the Sound” automobile license plate was sold at a government auction in 2013 to Kelly K. Navarro for $340,000. However, after an agreement could not be reached with State of Connecticut for a lease for the land under the lighthouse, known as “bottom land,” Navarro asked for her deposit back from the federal government.

Under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act, the Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse was originally offered for free to the local community or any qualified nonprofit. But no one wanted it so it went up for auction. For more information you can refer to the story “Preserve the Sound Symbol Sold” that appeared in the November/December 2013 issue of Lighthouse Digest.

Legislation is now pending with the State of Connecticut to resolve this issue.

This story appeared in the Jul/Aug 2015 edition of Lighthouse Digest Magazine.
