Sebasco Honored

The Sebasco Harbor Resort in Sebasco Estates, Maine, which has a strong lighthouse theme was recently recommended by the New York Times for its “untouched waterfront setting and its appeal to more contemporary-minded vacationers.”

Crossed the Bar

Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Janice Cole Clark who passed away at age 92. Clark was an active volunteer in a number of organizations and was honored by the Rhode Island Chapter of the American Heart Association for her fund raising efforts. She was an active supporter

of the Friends of Rhode Island’s Sakonnet Lighthouse, a group that received ownership of the lighthouse in 1985 and in 1997 relit the 1884 lighthouse as an aid to navigation.

Bingham Recovering

Our best wishes go out to lighthouse aficionado and historian Douglas Bingham of Massachusetts who recently underwent a kidney transplant. Bingham, an active lighthouse preservationist was active in the early development of American Lighthouse Foundation and served as its first Secretary. As well as continuing to narrate lighthouse cruises he often travels giving lighthouse lectures.

Finalists For JELD-WEN Window Restoration Initiative

Nearly half a million votes were cast for the 12 finalists for the twelve finalists of the JELD-WEN Reliable Lighthouse Restoration Initiative this year. The hotly contested race is now down to three worthy candidates: Bodie Island Light Station in North Carolina, Grand Traverse Lighthouse in Michigan, and New Canal Lighthouse in Louisiana. With very different stories, histories and architectural styles, these top lighthouse finalists together generated nearly 70 percent of the public votes. The next stage is a thorough evaluation of each lighthouse to determine need, overall restoration plans and historic preservation requirements.
