Louisiana's Pass a L'Outre Lighthouse is now in its final days. Listed on our Doomsday List of endangered lighthouses, the lighthouse is now minus its lantern room, which was knocked off the tower in storms.

Located near Venice, Louisiana in the Mississippi River Delta, the l855 light station was once home to a keeper and his family. It must have been a hot bug infested place in those early days and the heat inside the iron tower must have been unbearable.

By the time the light station was abandoned by the government in the 1930s the 85-foot tall lighthouse, which had slowly been sinking in the mud, was reduced to only around 50 feet in height.

Although the sinking of the tower in the mud seems to have slowed down, the height of the tower has again been reduced with the loss of the lantern room and the lighthouse is now in its final days.

Historical stories of the memories of the keepers of this lighthouse have been elusive, as have been photographs of the station and the people who staffed and lived at the lighthouse. If any of our readers have photographs to share we would appreciate hearing from you.
