Photo Caption:

This is an aerial view taken during late 1930s. It shows the “highway” running between the lighthouse and the keeper’s quarters south to the CCC camp. Prior to the dune system built by the CCC and groins put in place in the 1960s, the beach ran straight as an arrow by the light station. The area would become the scene of a constant battle with nature to retain the wide beach. This picture became a popular postcard upon which Sudie Jennette wrote to her son Rany while he was in Service. After the families left the light station in 1936, Sudie always longed to return to Cape Hatteras and have all the family together once again. The families never lived there again.
