In 1876 the government decided to build a new tower at the station. At that time the lantern on the old tower that was attached to the keeper’s house was removed and the tower was capped, as is shown in this photo. However, the granite keeper’s house was extremely hard to heat and was always damp and cold. These living conditions may have led to the early death of his wife Lucy, who passed away at the age of 50 on November 26, 1880. Her tombstone reads, “It Was Hard Indeed to Part With Thee, In Haste The Summons Came, God Called Thee To Thy Home Above, Forever Their to Reign.” (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
