Nils Nelson came to Southwest Ledge Lighthouse in 1907 as a veteran keeper who had previously been honored with a Gold Life Saving Metal. But he had arrived at Southwest Ledge as a demoted head keeper, and now he would be an assistant keeper. Soon after his arrival he began to act erratically and the head keeper, Jorgen Tonneson, later said that he feared for his life. In fact, he was so fearful of Nelson that he had his brother-in-law come to the lighthouse to stay with him. Tonneson stated that on more than one occasion, that he and his brother-in-law prevented the depressed Nelson from taking his own life. On January 2, 1908, Nelson went to the mainland when, sadly, he took his own life. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
