This U.S. Navy sight vane, found at the top of the station where the original Point Conception Lighthouse stood, dates from 1943. The post it was mounted on had rotted, and the vane itself was extremely dirty and did not turn well. Keepers used the sight vane to locate objects at a distance, a ship in this case. The sight vane was no longer used after the Pt. Conception Lighthouse was automated in 1972. Back to the edition of: Sep/Oct 2014
