George D. Cobb (1872-1940) was the last keeper to serve at California’s Fort Point Lighthouse. George Cobb started his lighthouse career in 1890 as a 1st assistant keeper at California’s Oakland Harbor Lighthouse and went on to serve at a number of other lighthouses. He served at Fort Point as the 1st assistant keeper from 1899 to 1900, and again from 1904 to 1908. In 1919, he was appointed head keeper at Fort Point Light. With the completion of the Golden Gate Bridge, the lighthouse was no longer needed at this location and it was extinguished on September 1, 1934. Cobb was then transferred to California’s Point Arena Lighthouse where he stayed until 1935. He then transferred to New Point Loma Lighthouse where he served until his retirement in 1938. He died two years later. (Golden Gate NRA, Park Archives, George and Ray Cobb Collection)
