In 1933, the light in the lantern from Sand Island Lighthouse was replaced by an acetylene light placed atop a 48-foot-tall steel tower that had been built near the original lighthouse, as shown here. The whereabouts of the 4th order Fresnel lens, that was once in the lantern, remains a mystery to this day. In 1975, the National Park Service took over Sand Island Lighthouse, and in 1985, at their prodding, the Coast Guard took down the steel tower and put a light back into the lantern of the original lighthouse.
