This photo in Gertrude’s album labeled, “Bathing Beauties,” was of some of many girls who found their way to Sand Island in the pre-World War II era. Bob Mackreth, a historian for the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore wrote; “They travelled to their island holiday by train and then boat; lugging trunks, wearing dresses and cumbersome hats. But once on the island they got rid of the fancy dresses and changed into trousers and sturdy boots. With freedom to move – and no men around to lecture them on “the right way” to do things – the girls let loose. They chopped wood, climbed on haystacks . . . They rested on the shore and gazed at the lake; arms draped around shoulders in casual affection.” In describing other photos in the photo album, Mackreth wrote, “One sequence shows a hike around the island’s circumference: a rugged, 10-mile trip that would challenge any trekker.” (Gertrude Wellisch and Walton Wellisch photo albums)
