Photo Caption:

Veteran lighthouse keeper Ernest Bloom, who served as the lighthouse keeper at Stepping Stones Lighthouse from 1910 to 1915, would be visibly shaken by its appearance today. He had been awarded the Lighthouse Service’s efficiency pennant which he flew next to the Stars and Stripes at the lighthouse for having the best-maintained lighthouse in the district. Ernest Bloom finished out his lighthouse career at Rondout Creek Lighthouse on New York State’s Hudson River where he served from 1923 to 1935. He was born as Ernest Bluhme in Sweden and changed his last name to Bloom when he moved to the United States. He is shown here with his wife Agnes. (Courtesy William Hooper)
