Lyman James Clark, son of Boston Harbor Light keeper Levi B. Clark, who was featured as a young toddler in the Christmas article, is shown here as a young man in his U.S. Lighthouse Service uniform. Lyman began his 29 years of duty at the age of 17 as quartermaster on the tender Azalea. He served for two years and then took a break after World War I to work on other vessels for the United Fruit Company. When he returned to the Lighthouse Service in 1928, he was first assigned to the Great Round Shoal Lightship LV-86 as Mate for four years before transferring to the Handkerchief Lightship LV-98 in 1932. He became Master of the Handkerchief in 1936 until at least 1940. He chose to accept a commission in the U.S. Coast Guard and after WW2, spent time on the Coast Guard cutter Mojave, buoy tender Spar and then Relief lightships until his retirement in 1955.
