In 1904, when journalist Arthur Hewitt was staying at the lighthouse, he took this photo of Roscoe Lopaus to include in his Outlook magazine article, “Signals of the Sea.” He wrote: “It was interesting, too, picturing the older keeper looking seaward from the light; his face and manner of life meant to me almost more than the light itself. He told me of his battle with the awful solitude and how he had overcome.” In 1889, another journalist talked with the brother of a former keeper from Minot’s Ledge Light regarding contemplation of the ocean vista: “He told me that the keepers are lovers of the sea, and always interested in the sublimity of that never dull point of prospect. Hours together they sit dreaming on old ocean, and communing with that great nature whom we all regard with wonder, but few of us see in such wonderful moods.” (Lighthouse Digest archives)
