This fine photograph of Minot’s Ledge Lighthouse was taken by head keeper Milton H. Reamy and first published in the October edition of New England Magazine in 1896. Note the Longfellow Chair hanging next to the tower door. Captain Reamy’s photographic skills were noted in an 1893 newspaper article along with the following description of his admirable character: “Capt. Milton H. Reamy, the principal keeper, is a little over 40 years old, with a fine, frank, expressive face, and a head which reminds one of the head of the late Pres. Garfield. When one meets him, he receives a direct, searching, though kindly glance from a pair of calm steel-gray eyes, and if the comer be found worthy, a handsome grasp which bespeaks warmth and decision of character. He is courteous, dignified and thoughtful, and has that often spoken of but rarely found, quality of making the visitor at ease at once. “He was born in Rochester, Mass, and has tried many methods of earning a living. He is a first-rate photographer, a skillful electrician, can perform many kinds of mechanical work, with considerable skill, and is an ideal lighthouse keeper. He has been at Minots for seven years and gives the very best of satisfaction. He is a temperate, modest, Christian gentleman, one whom it is pleasant to meet, a pleasure to know, and by whom it is an honor to be reckoned as a friend.” (Courtesy Anne Catteau)
