Keeper Joseph Enos Frates, Sr. spent his entire 27-year career at Minot’s Ledge Lighthouse, save a few months at Race Point Light in 1883. He started at Minot’s in 1882 and was promoted up the ladder to 2nd and then 1st assistant, where he remained in that position for 22 years under head keeper Milton H. Reamy. It was very rare for an assistant to serve so long without having an opportunity to be promoted to head keeper; but apparently, Frates choose to stay in that role under Reamy for the rest of his career rather than move to another light as the one in charge. The two of them must have had a great friendship after that length of time spent living in a solitary tower together. (Courtesy of Cheryl Maxim)
