Historic image of Georgia’s Cockspur Island Lighthouse. One of the men was undoubtedly the lighthouse keeper and at least one of his assistants. In August 1871, during a storm, lighthouse keeper Patrick Egan, along with his two sons, Thomas and Michael, set out to service the lighthouse. On the way to the lighthouse, the trio’s boat capsized. Patrick and Michael managed to cling to the overturned boat, but Thomas disappeared under the waves. His body was never recovered.
