At every port of call, celebrations were held that featured naval and sailors’ parades from the fleet ships along with a multitude of official public events. While California coastal cities such as San Diego, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara planned extravaganzas to fete the fleet, none was grander and lasted longer than those held in San Francisco that virtually shut the city down for 11 days of partying. “Fleet fever” drew an estimate of over a million people to the area in a great profession of American pride and patriotism.
