George Rockwell Putnam (1865-1953) started his career in the Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1890. After twenty years traveling the world drawing maps and charts, he was appointed to be the first Commissioner of Lighthouses of the new civilian Bureau of Lighthouses in 1910 where he served until he reached mandatory retirement age in 1935. As Commodore Dillion wrote, George Putnam was “a person of unimpeachable honesty and ability.” (Lighthouse Digest archives)
