Lamp-lighter Samuel Eugene Andrews, age 27, and his wife Fannie, age 24, are shown here in a portrait taken in 1889, probably at the time of their wedding. The couple went on to have five children: Elizabeth born in 1899 who died the following March, Lillian born in 1901, Ruth in 1903, Guy in 1907, and Doris in 1912. Apparently, Samuel Eugene Andrews did not like his first name and always went by S. Eugene Andrews. As well as being a lamp-lighter, he worked as a cooper/barrel maker and as a janitor. He died in 1919 of Pott’s Disease, a rare infectious disease of the spine. His wife Fannie lived another 52 years until her death in 1971. She never remarried. (Photo courtesy Paige Andrews Kelley)
