Herman Burke is shown here with his dog in front of the base of the Port Jefferson Lighthouse in Port Jefferson, New York. He became the keeper here in 1901 after having been transferred from the Stratford Shoal (Middle Ground) Lighthouse in Long Island Sound, which is midway between Long Island, NY, and Connecticut, where he had served for the previous four years. In November of 1905 an explosion of oil set fire to the lighthouse destroying it. Keeper Burke had to jump into the icy water to avoid the flames. He was nearly exhausted when a rescue boat plucked him from the water. Using the same design as the original structure, the lighthouse was quickly rebuilt and relighted on December 9, 1905.
