Fort Gratiot Lighthouse Station in Port Huron, Michigan as it appears today. In its June 30, 1937 edition, the Times Herald newspaper wrote that thanks to keeper John E. Smith “the grounds surrounding the lighthouse have been landscaped and the dark green of the small cedars, hedges, and grass contrasts enhances the beauty of the white tower.” In September 2010, ownership of the light station was transferred from federal ownership to Michigan’s St. Clair County.
