Michigan’s 1897 Forty Mile Point Lighthouse where John E. Smith became the 1st assistant keeper 1906. On May 1, 1911, he was promoted to replace head keeper Xavier Rains, who had been transferred to Mama Juda Lighthouse on the Detroit River. However, in a strange twist of destiny, Xavier Rains returned to Forty Mile Point on March 15, 1912 to become the assistant keeper under John Smith. In 1912, 1913, and again in 1925, keeper Smith was awarded the lighthouse pennant and efficiency star for the best maintained lighthouse in the district. Forty Mile Point Lighthouse got its name because it is approximately 40 miles south of Mackinac and 40 miles north of Thunder Bay, Michigan. Today the lighthouse is cared for by the 40 Mile Point Lighthouse Society.
