Photo Caption:

This portrait of Bertha Holbrook and her daughter Ethel Mae was taken within a few years of Samuel’s untimely death. In 1924, Bertha married again to Lamont O. Hanley of South Thomaston. Tragically, seven months later, Lamont died at the age of 55 leaving Bertha widowed a second time over. In 1930, Bertha and Ethel Mae were living in Readfield, Maine where Bertha was employed as a housekeeper. She later moved back to South Thomaston, continuing to support herself in that occupation until her death in 1946 at age 54. (Courtesy of Heather Godfrey Willis)
