Photo Caption:

A very rare photo of Elmer F. Holbrook and his wife Eunice taken in 1918. Elmer was born August 13, 1869 at Swan’s Island and started his lighthouse service at Matinicus Rock Lighthouse in 1898. He transferred to Isle of Haut Lighthouse as its first keeper in 1907 where he stayed for 15 years. A current family member who lived with Elmer during his retirement years remembers him to be “cantankerous” and that he had a nervous breakdown in 1922, which is why he could no longer serve. It is possible that his son Samuel’s death was likely a contributing factor to his lack of mental stability. Following his service, Elmer turned to farming and bought a 90-acre parcel in the Rockland area near Glen Cove. Elmer F. Holbrook died on July 8, 1940 at the age of 80 and is buried next to his wife Eunice in the Achorn Cemetery in Rockland, Maine. (Courtesy of Heather Godfrey Willis)
