The gravestone of Four Mile Point Lighthouse keeper Moses Walters at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Athens, New York. During the Civil War, he served Co. K, 120th Regiment of the New York Volunteers. Wounded during the Battle of Gettysburg, he laid on the battlefield for 36 hours before he was removed, losing his right leg. According to his obituary, because of his wounds, he “contracted ailments from which he afterward suffered greatly, but bore them always with fortitude and patience.” Not only did the Civil War cause him to lose his leg, it brought him other family tragedies. His father, Alanson Walters, was killed in the Battle of Winchester; his brother, Nelson, died in Andersonville Prison; and another brother was killed in the Battle of the Wilderness. Moses Walters’ obituary said “He was a man of most estimable character, a good neighbor, a loving and indulgent husband.” Sadly, there is no mention on his gravestone that he was a Civil War veteran or a lighthouse keeper.
