Coast Guardsman Rick Buchsteiner decorating the Christmas Tree in 1973 in the living room of the Cape Hinchinbrook Lighthouse. The flags on the wall were painted by a previous Coast Guardsman who had been stationed there, and the flags represented the names of the crew who had been stationed there at the time. When Buchsteiner arrived at the lighthouse, he was asked, “Do you know how to cook? If not you will learn.” Although the crew always had breakfast and lunch on their own, the evening meals were all prepared by Buchsteiner. OIC William Ottow recalled that Rick Buchsteiner made some of the best meals he ever had, something that he remembers to this day. (Photo courtesy Rick Buchsteiner.)
