Part of Carl Hill’s responsibilities at the Tarpaulin Cove Lighthouse was to maintain and operate the fog bell. This thirty-foot-tall fog bell tower was destroyed in the great New England hurricane of September 21, 1938, and was never rebuilt. (Lighthouse Digest archives.)
