Photo Caption:

Maine’s Egg Rock Lighthouse as it appeared during the time that Ambrose H. Wasgatt served as its first lighthouse keeper from 1875 to 1885. The lighthouse was a near twin to Maine’s Avery Rock Lighthouse that was also constructed in 1875. Because a second floor was added to the structure in 1899, the lighthouse looks significantly different today. The pyramid structure on legs shown here was the fog bell tower. Before the lighthouse was built here, the island served as a Coastal Defense Battery with a number of cannons placed on the island, some of which were still there when the lighthouse was built.
