Mark Clement, shown at left, was an assistant Coast Guard keeper a Boston Lighthouse from 1991 to 1995. When his first stint was up, he liked it so much at Boston Light that he asked for and was granted an extension. “I love it out here,” he said. “It’s peaceful. It gets a little quiet here in the winter.” One Christmas, a Coast Guard boat brought out a Christmas tree in choppy seas, dropping off the tree at the concrete dock, and then motored away with no time for pleasantries. During his time there, personal phone calls cost 50 cents a minute on a bulky cellular phone. (Lighthouse Digest archives photo by John Forbes.)
