Following his six year travel odyssey visiting every lighthouse district in the United States, Frederick P. Dillon moved with his family to Detroit in 1933 and took up residence in the old 1882 Belle Isle Lighthouse on the Detroit River in Detroit, Michigan, which had been decommissioned in 1930. Later, Dillon wrote of the demolition of the lighthouse in 1943. “One of the biggest projects undertaken was the construction of a Coast Guard Station at the site of my former home in the Belle Isle Light Station dwelling. The dwelling and tower were demolished and dredged out to form a boat basin and Coast Guard Station. How that did wrench my heart to see the old landmark go where I had watched the great cargo carriers pass on an average of every twenty minutes during the ‘open season’.
